Back-to-School Vision Checklist for Kids and Teens

As summer break winds down, it’s time to get your child ready for another school year. You’ve probably stocked up on supplies, packed new backpacks, and scheduled haircuts. But what about their eyes? A healthy pair of eyes is just as important as new pencils and notebooks.

Kids and teens rely on their vision every day for reading, writing, using computers, playing sports, and more. But many vision problems go unnoticed because children don’t always know what “normal” vision looks like. That’s why an annual eye exam is so important, especially before school starts.

Here’s our easy Back-to-School Vision Checklist to help make sure your child is ready to succeed in the classroom.

1. Schedule an Eye Exam

Don’t wait until your child complains about blurry vision. Many vision problems are missed during basic school screenings. A comprehensive eye exam can catch common issues like nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and even signs of eye strain or lazy eye. Our team at Total Eye Care will make sure your child’s eyes are healthy and working as they should.

2. Watch for Warning Signs

Even if your child doesn’t say anything, there may be signs they’re having trouble seeing. Look for:

  • Squinting
  • Headaches
  • Holding books very close
  • Rubbing their eyes often
  • Trouble focusing or sitting still

If you’ve noticed any of these signs, it’s time to book an appointment.

3. Consider Screen Time Habits

Kids are using screens more than ever for homework, entertainment, and even socializing. Too much screen time can lead to eye strain and fatigue. Encourage the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

4. Check Their Glasses or Contacts

If your child already wears glasses or contact lenses, make sure their prescription is still working well. Lenses can get scratched, frames can bend, and vision can change quickly as kids grow. We’ll make sure everything fits and functions properly.

5. Don’t Skip Eye Protection

If your child plays sports, ask us about protective eyewear to help prevent injuries. And don’t forget sunglasses for outdoor activities. UV protection matters at every age.
